Evergreen decor: gallery walls

Evergreen decor: gallery walls

Gallery walls never really go out of style, and for good reason! They’re the perfect way to display disparate photos, mementos, and pieces of art, and there’s no one “right” way to do them, so you’re truly only bound by your own creativity (and maybe a lease…)

Adding 3-D items like hats, musical instruments, baskets, fabric, vintage clothing, jewelry, bags, etc, gives your gallery wall extra punch, and a less formal feel.

Inspiration via Apartment Therapy:

What if you can’t or don’t want to put holes in your walls? Try T-pins in drywall (insert at an angle; not for heavy items), washi tape, or picture clips attached to the wall with T-pins. (Affiliate links.)

Using T-pins to hang art & other items on the wall is a trick I learned while doing craft shows years ago. They make tiny, almost invisible holes, and are super easy to insert into drywall – perfect for a gallery wall if you’re renting, or just like to change things up a lot, like me…

farewell summer: seasonal changes at home

farewell summer: seasonal changes at home

I’m thinking about fall. Isn’t everyone? It’s coming. I’ve been seeing goldenrod blooming for a month already, about two weeks earlier than usual. In England, they call goldenrod farewell summer.

The cicadas are loud enough that I hear them over the constant hum of my ac & fan. They’ve completely drowned out the crickets for now, but after they’ve gone, the crickets will still be here.

I like this transitional season, in large part because it’s the transition from my least favorite season to my very favorite one. Besides, transitions can be nice in their own right – you get to be in two places (seasons, jobs, houses, hair styles…) at once. It’s a chance to wrap up loose ends, and complete preparations for what’s ahead.

I’m obsessing over this room; doesn’t it feel like it’s mid-change to you?

And this one, plus the brilliant camping cot + tray coffee table:

These free printables seem just right for this season-between-seasons. If you don’t have access to a color printer at home or work, you can go to staples.com & order prints on cardstock for less than a dollar each, then pick them up in the store nearest you. (Not an affiliate link, I just want to give you options!)

I think they’d look great framed, or hung on clipboards on the wall for a super easy presto-chango, or even simpler, just clips:

So, how about you? Are you making seasonal changes yet?

Scandinavian Style

Scandinavian Style

Scandinavian style: bright, light-filled, clean, calm, uncluttered, welcoming.

Aspirational.

When we say “Scandinavian Style”, what are we talking about? According to Scandinavia Standard, “If you’re speaking of a specific current geographic or political context, “Scandinavia” means the region that includes Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and the Faroe Islands. If you’d like to include Finland and Iceland in that same context, use the word “Nordic.”

When speaking of a cultural region including shared history and design, the words “Scandinavian” and “Nordic” are interchangeable.” (The Spruce has an interesting, more detailed explanation here.)

So, I’m referring to design from (or inspired by design from) Denmark, Sweden, Norway, the Faroe Islands, Finland, and Iceland. The photo above is of a summer house in Gotland, a large Swedish island and province in the Baltic Sea. Gotland is on my bucket list.

You probably already know the basics:

  • White or light colored walls
  • Natural flooring, preferably light-toned wood
  • Minimal window treatments, or none
  • Neutral color palette + pops of color
  • Lots of natural textures; think wood, stone, leather (or faux)
  • Comfort, comfort, comfort
